(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Headscarf-wearing women hold frequent demonstrations to call for a complete end to the ban.
The Council of State on Wednesday approved an appeal filed by the Higher Education Board against an earlier ruling by the high court that did not allow the wearing of headscarves during the Selection Examination for Academic Personnel and Graduate Studies (ALES).
The ruling means that headscarf-wearing test takers will be able to take the exam with their headscarves on. This was after the posting of a guidebook on the Student Selection and Placement Center's website that stated “taking the examination with one's hair exposed” is no longer a condition for taking the test.
However, uneasy with test takers being allowed to wear headscarves during the ALES, the Education and Science Workers' Union filed a suit with the Council of State, saying that the use of the headscarf during the examination was contrary to the principle of secularism in Turkey.
Practising Muslims feels a lot of reforms are still needed as far as the ban of the hijab headscarf is concerned. Currently, women wearing headscarves are also not allowed to enter Turkish military facilities, including hospitals and recreational areas belonging to the military.
