ABU DHABI (Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Doctors highlight the importance of proper nutrition during Ramadan and caution residents, especially those with diabetes, not to overeat during Iftar time. According to the doctors, one of the major complications of diabetes is periodontal disease, a chronic infection of tissues supporting the teeth and a major cause of tooth loss.People with diabetes are more vulnerable to the millions of germs that live in the mouth an as a result, they are more likely to have infections in their gums and the bones that hold the teeth.Dental Surgeon Dr Nimi George, Lifeline Hospital in Abu Dhabi, said the severity of periodontal attachment loss is increased proportionally with rising insulin resistance. Similarly, the number of teeth loss is proportional with the level of insulin resistance. She added that many residents who are diabetic neglect their oral care due to work pressure and risk contracting this disease if preventive measures are not taken. She stressed the importance of regular dental visits which provide opportunities for prevention, early detection, and treatment of periodontal disease. Moreover, she opines that regular dental cleaning improves glycemic control in patients with poorly controlled diabetic conditions.“People should remember that living a healthy lifestyle is essential to fight obesity, diabetes and periodontal disease,” explained Dr George. In recent years, diabetes among UAE residents has risen to an alarming rate because of increased consumption of energy-rich, nutrient-poor foods with high levels of sugar and saturated fats, and people with more sedentary lifestyles. To support people with diabetes during Ramadan, the National Health Insurance Company- Daman announced plans to organise an educational seminar titled “Managing Diabetes during Ramadan” on July 16 ahead of the holy month to provide patients expert advice on managing their health and dietary requirements during fasting. The move comes as part of Daman’s Disease Management Programme (DMP) designed to improve the quality of life for those suffering from chronic diseases. The Programme provides health coaches to work closely with members to manage their conditions.Daman’s Health Support Manager, Dr Alfons Grabosch, commented: “The seminar forms part of our ongoing dedication to support those who suffer from chronic diseases within our community. Raising awareness of the importance of nutrition amongst diabetics ahead of Ramadan, where many intend to alter their dietary habits, will help improve their fasting experience and reduce the risk of medical complications resulting from poor nutrition.”The seminar, conducted by a professional team from the company’s Disease Management Programme, will include an introductory session focusing on Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity, a session about healthy nutrition and healthy lifestyles for diabetics during Ramadan, and a workshop utilising the powerful Diabetes Conversation Map, a renowned diabetes education tool developed by Healthy Interactions and the International Diabetes Federation.A healthy dinner will also be offered at the end of the seminar explaining the right portions and types of food recommended through the Healthy Plate concept. The seminar will be conducted in Arabic and is free of charge to the public.
