MPs are “deeply concerned at the refusal” of the Royal Parks Authority to allow the use of Speaker's Corner in Hyde Park, said Corbyn, who is vice-chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
Speaker’s Corner has been a “traditional venue of free speech for several centuries,” he said in the motion, which calls for a reconsideration of ban.
Last week, STWC expressed alarm at the refusal by the park authority after planning the mass rally for months but said that the march, which supported families of soldiers killed in the war and servicemen refusing to fight in Afghanistan, would still go ahead.
“The excuse being used is that the marchers may cause obstruction to people attending a Winter Wonderland event taking place half a mile away,” an STWC spokesman said.
“It is not acceptable that protesters should be excluded from this space for purely commercial considerations. We call on the authorities to change their decision,” Said the spokesman.
Speakers’ Corner is commonly used as a main site of protests and demonstrations in London, being adjacent to Tyburn Gallows, where dissidents were publicly executed until the 18th century.
