The annual festival commemorates Abraham's readiness to obey Allah and sacrifice his son. To some Islamic individuals, this son is Ishamael. He did this as a commandment of God who then provided a ram to be slaughtered instead. The story of the prophet Abraham from the Quran parallels similar stories of Abraham in the Old Testament of Christianity and the Torah of Judaism.
The festival also concludes the annual Hajj season where millions of Muslims make a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, as a religious duty.
