He added Merkel's tribute to Westergaard would also fuel the hatred of Islam in Germany.
The Secretary General of the Central Council of Muslims Aiman Mazyek pointed out that Merkel was honoring the carricaturist who insulted Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
Awarding a prize to Westergaard in these emotionally charged times in Germany
is 'highly problematic,' he added.
Merkel's honoring of Westergaard comes in the wake of a deeply anti-Muslim
mood in Germany triggered by the release of an openly Islamophobic book which
alleged Muslims posed a threat to German society.
Germany's 4.3 million Muslims are increasingly feeling helpless and concerned over rising Islamophobia in their country.
The center-right Merkel government is being accused by Muslim groups for not being serious in its fight against Islamophobic tendencies in Germany.
