According to Ahlul Bayt (A) News Agency – ABNA.ir – Iraqi security forces carried out an operation targeting al-Qaeda hideouts in the city of Baquba, around 57 kilometres north-east of Baghdad, on Monday. Twenty-five al-Qaeda members were arrested.
"Among those arrested is the emir of the city of Baquba, known as Haji Basem, who is involved in the deaths of 24 people and the displacement of 50 families in the area during the years of escalated sectarian violence, between 2005 and 2007," security sources said on Tuesday.
Security forces announced that the imam of a Sunni mosque in the city of Mosul was shot and killed by unknown gunmen after evening prayers on Monday night.
