AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Mohammad Eslami, the Vice President and Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, continuing his previous correspondence with the Director General of the IAEA, protested the recent attack on the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in an official letter to Rafael Grossi.
The letter states: "On the morning of Saturday, April 4, 2026, at approximately 8:30 a.m. local time in Iran, the vicinity of the perimeter of Unit 1 of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP-1) was targeted by an airstrike and missile attack. Due to the blast wave and shrapnel resulting from this attack, a building inside the site was damaged, one of the honorable security personnel of the plant was martyred, and several others were injured."
The Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran emphasized in this letter that "this attack marks the fourth time Unit 1 of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant has been targeted, and it could entail the risk of widespread release of radioactive material from an operational reactor—an issue that would have irreversible consequences for the people, the environment, and even neighboring countries."
Islamic Iran also described this act as a clear violation of the principle prohibiting attacks on nuclear facilities under the safeguards of a state party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), characterizing it as an evident instance of a war crime and a threat to the global non-proliferation regime.
Another section of the letter emphasizes that "these military attacks violate the Geneva Conventions and their relevant protocols, the IAEA Statute, the NPT, Iran's Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with the Agency (INFCIRC/214), Board of Governors resolutions, and IAEA safety standards."
The Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, criticizing the inaction of the IAEA and the Director General himself regarding these attacks, stated that "merely expressing 'deep concern' without explicit condemnation of these aggressive acts is insufficient, and such an approach could embolden the aggressors to repeat these attacks."
The letter states: "It is clear that these inactions—particularly the Director General's biased media interviews and political remarks, including the statements made in his interview on March 18, 2026, with CBS News in the United States—have further emboldened the aggressors to continue these ruthless violations of international principles and rules. Undoubtedly, the continuation of this inaction constitutes a form of blatant complicity with criminals. This complicity will be recorded in history forever and will, of course, further undermine the credibility of the Agency."
The Vice President, in this letter, called upon the IAEA and its Director General to take firm stances, condemn these attacks against Iran's safeguarded nuclear facilities, fulfill their statutory responsibilities, and not remain indifferent spectators of the situation.
Eslami emphasized at the conclusion that "the Islamic Republic of Iran will take the necessary measures to defend its sovereign rights."
