Maliki reaffirms Iraq’s sovereignty in meeting with US envoy

Nouri al‑Maliki met US envoy Thomas Barrack in Baghdad, stressing Iraq’s sovereignty and the will of its people. The meeting came as the US openly opposed Maliki’s candidacy for prime minister, with Trump threatening to cut aid and Washington warning of sanctions.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Nouri al‑Maliki, head of Iraq’s State of Law Coalition, reaffirmed his commitment to Iraq’s sovereignty and the will of its people during a meeting in Baghdad with Thomas Barrack, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Syria.

Maliki, a former Iraqi prime minister, received Barrack on Friday, where the two discussed recent political developments and Iraq’s upcoming national priorities.

He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the democratic process and strengthening political stability, stressing that Iraq’s sovereignty and the choices of its citizens must be respected.

Both sides agreed on the need to maintain ongoing communication and coordination on issues of mutual interest.

The meeting occurred amid growing US interference in Iraq’s internal affairs, as Washington has openly opposed Maliki’s nomination for the premiership.

Earlier, Trump warned on his Truth Social platform that the US would halt assistance to Iraq if Maliki returned as prime minister, citing his previous experience with Maliki’s earlier term.

Despite this, the State of Law Coalition insists that Maliki’s candidacy for a third term enjoys broad “consensus” and “national acceptance.”

According to Al Jazeera, citing a source within the Shia Coordination Framework, Barrack informed Maliki that Washington would impose sanctions if he proceeded with his candidacy.

The source added that the first phase of sanctions could be announced as early as mid‑next week, initially targeting figures close to the resistance before expanding to include some leaders within the Coordination Framework.
