AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): As reports of anti-Islamic remarks and behavior increase in Western workplaces and educational institutions, Muslim experts and activists are warning that Islamophobia is becoming normalized within official structures
According to an account published from the experience of a Muslim teacher, some colleagues in school environments make offensive statements about Islam and Muslim countries, transmitting discriminatory attitudes to students. The report notes that such conduct often begins as casual conversation but gradually promotes notions of cultural superiority and the belittling of Muslim religious identity.
The teacher stressed that many formal complaints filed by Muslims fail to reach a meaningful outcome within administrative systems, adding that the process of addressing Islamophobia is more complicated and often more discouraging than dealing with other forms of discrimination. “In parts of the public sphere, derogatory remarks against Muslims are not only left unchallenged, but they are sometimes treated as ‘acceptable,’” the teacher said.
At the same time, the report pointed to examples of successful legal follow-up, including a court victory by Dr. Salman Butt against the former UK home secretary, as well as legal complaints filed by Mohammad Hijab against media outlets and European officials that resulted in formal apologies and the lifting of restrictions.
Emphasizing the role of legal awareness and education, the author of the report recommended that Muslims respond to discrimination through careful documentation, recording the time and place of incidents, gathering evidence, maintaining a professional tone, and using trade-union and legal support mechanisms.
According to the author, Islamophobia in educational settings affects not only individuals but also the mindset and future of students, potentially leading to the continuation of structural discrimination. Therefore, confronting misinformation and demanding accountability from institutions were described as part of a social responsibility aimed at preserving coexistence and justice.
