Caribbean civil society urges Caricom to impose arms embargo on Israel

Over 40 Caribbean civil society groups urged CARICOM to impose a full arms embargo on Israel.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Over 40 civil society organizations and notable individuals from across the Caribbean have issued an open letter urging CARICOM leaders to impose a comprehensive arms embargo on Israel. The letter calls for bold measures, including a full military embargo, halting arms-related shipping, and suspending diplomatic, cultural, and sporting ties with what they describe as a “rogue state.”

The signatories also demand a ban on the use of CARICOM-flagged vessels for transporting weapons or dual-use goods to Israel, and the suspension of diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv.

Additionally, they urge CARICOM to support legal action against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC), including backing South Africa’s genocide case.

The letter calls for participation in the upcoming emergency meeting of The Hague Group in Bogotá, Colombia, later this month, to coordinate legal and diplomatic responses.

This appeal comes just before the 49th CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting, scheduled for July 6–8 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The coalition emphasized that while many issues are on the summit’s agenda, Israel’s actions in Gaza require urgent attention.

The letter reflects a growing international demand for accountability and urges Caribbean nations to uphold international legal standards. The authors argue that the region’s legacy of anti-colonialism and solidarity with oppressed peoples makes such action a moral imperative.
