AhlulBayt News Agency: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that the Israeli aggression against Iran could have escalated into a “widespread and uncontrollable” regional war if left unanswered.
Speaking at the Eurasian Economic Forum via video link, Pezeshkian said Iran’s armed forces acted in legitimate self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter during the 12-day conflict.
On June 13, Israel launched a full-scale assault on Iranian soil, targeting military and nuclear sites and killing top commanders, scientists, and civilians.
On June 22, the United States joined the aggression by bombing three Iranian nuclear facilities, violating international law and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
In response, Iran launched missiles at al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest US military base in West Asia, on June 23.
After suffering heavy losses from 22 waves of Iranian missile strikes, Israel declared a unilateral ceasefire on June 24.
Pezeshkian condemned the attacks as “brutal and illegal,” noting they occurred during indirect Iran-US talks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.
He stressed that the strikes on nuclear facilities under IAEA supervision were a gross violation of international norms and damaged the credibility of the NPT.
The president said many civilians were killed or injured in Israeli attacks on residential areas, hospitals, and public infrastructure.
He urged the UN Security Council and IAEA to take a firmer stance against aggressors and abandon appeasement toward the Zionist regime.
Pezeshkian called the forum an opportunity to condemn such aggression and threats to regional and global peace.
He also highlighted Iran’s commitment to regional economic cooperation and the importance of implementing the free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Signed in December 2023, the agreement aims to diversify Iran’s trade partners amid Western sanctions.
Pezeshkian emphasized plans to modernize transport corridors, expand port transit, and connect EAEU members to global markets.
He also called for enhanced energy cooperation, digital infrastructure, and joint efforts to counter unilateralism.
The president stressed the need for an independent, anti-sanctions banking system to fully benefit from the trade deal.
He proposed financing joint projects through the Eurasian Development Bank, expanding the EAEU’s currency use, and settling trade in national currencies.
