Turkey strengthens Syria’s military while maintaining troop presence

Turkey has reaffirmed its military presence in Syria, providing training and advisory support to Syrian forces. Defense Minister Yasar Guler stated that withdrawal would only be considered once peace, border security, and refugee repatriation are ensured.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Turkey has announced that it is actively training Syria’s armed forces and strengthening its defenses, with no immediate plans to withdraw its troops from the country.

Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler stated in a written response to Reuters that Ankara is providing military training and advisory support to enhance Syria’s defense capabilities under its new leadership.

Guler emphasized Turkey’s commitment to supporting Syria’s territorial integrity and counterterrorism efforts.

The security situation in Syria remains unstable following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad’s government by militant factions, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), on December 8, 2024.

Guler clarified that Ankara’s military presence—estimated at over 20,000 troops—would remain in place until lasting peace is achieved, full border security is ensured, and the safe return of Syrian refugees is guaranteed.

Turkey, which has long supported opposition forces in Syria, has established a significant military presence across northern Syria after years of cross-border operations against Kurdish militants it classifies as terrorists.
