AhlulBayt News Agency: Millions of Iranians from various social backgrounds, along with Muslims worldwide, commemorated the 36th anniversary of the passing of Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The main mourning ceremony took place on Wednesday at Imam Khomeini’s Mausoleum in southern Tehran, where Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, addressed the massive gathering.
This year’s event, held under the slogan “Imam of Hope and Power,” attracted thousands of pilgrims to the Mausoleum, as in previous years, with similar ceremonies organized in cities and towns across the country.
Muslims and followers of Imam Khomeini also held memorial ceremonies in various countries, including those in West Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Speaking on the eve of the anniversary, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized that adherence to Imam Khomeini’s principles ensures the Islamic Republic and other Muslim communities remain resilient against external pressures.
Highlighting Imam Khomeini’s vision for independence, dignity, and resistance, Pezeshkian criticized adversaries for attempting to suppress Muslim scientific progress and creativity through threats and bribery, asserting that such efforts are futile.
“Foreign adversaries and their internal agents spend billions of dollars and launch propaganda campaigns to weaken national unity through rumors and misinformation,” Pezeshkian stated.
“The United States, Israel, and their allies seek to create discord and unrest to facilitate their harmful agendas, but they will never succeed in weakening the unity of the Iranian nation.”
Regarding Iran’s foreign policy, Pezeshkian reiterated that the Islamic Republic prioritizes peace and security and does not pursue nuclear weapons.
“Those who accuse Iran of seeking weapons of mass destruction are the same ones threatening Muslims in the region with such arms,” he said, adding that "No conscious and freedom-seeking individual" can ignore the blatant human rights violations committed by the Israeli regime, backed by the US and Europe.
Imam Khomeini passed away at the age of 86 on June 3, 1989. Recognized as one of the most influential figures of modern history, he led popular protests against Iran’s former Pahlavi regime, which had been a key ally of the United States.
Imam Khomeini spent years in exile in Iraq, Turkey, and France, leading a growing grassroots movement that ultimately ended Iran’s centuries-old monarchy.
The anniversary falls just one day before another historic date—June 5, 1963—when Imam Khomeini’s first uprising against the monarchy saw demonstrations in Tehran and Qom.
