Chile withdraws military attachés from Israel over Gaza war

Chile has withdrawn its military attachés from Israel, citing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Palestinian Presidency praised the move, calling for international action. Spain reaffirmed its commitment to condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Chile has announced the withdrawal of three military attachés from its embassy in Tel Aviv, citing the humanitarian catastrophe caused by Israel’s war on Gaza.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Chilean Foreign Ministry said the decision, coordinated with the Defense Ministry, was formally conveyed to Israeli authorities.

The ministry explained that the withdrawal was due to the "extremely serious humanitarian situation" affecting the Palestinian population in Gaza.

It also condemned the "disproportionate and indiscriminate military operation by the Israeli army" and the "constant obstacles to allowing aid" into the besieged Palestinian territory.

The Palestinian Presidency praised Chile’s "significant and courageous" decision, stating that it reflects global condemnation of Israel’s ongoing actions against Palestinians.

It further called for serious international measures to compel Israel to cease its military operations in Gaza and violent attacks in the occupied West Bank, including East al-Quds.

The statement emphasized the need for compliance with international legitimacy resolutions and laws that prohibit genocide, land theft, and assaults on Islamic and Christian holy sites.

Chile’s move marks an escalation in diplomatic tensions between Santiago and Tel Aviv.

The Latin American country has joined South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its military actions in Gaza.

Israel launched its war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, following Hamas’s operation against Israeli forces in response to intensified aggression against Palestinians.

Since then, Israel has killed at least 54,084 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 123,308 others in Gaza.

In addition to targeting civilian infrastructure, Israel has blocked humanitarian aid and used starvation as a method of warfare.

In another development on Wednesday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reaffirmed his country’s commitment to speaking out against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

“One year after recognizing the State of Palestine, the pain in Gaza is unbearable. Spain will continue to raise its voice—louder than ever—to put an end to the massacre the world is witnessing today,” Sanchez wrote in an X post.
