President Hassan Rouhani in a letter on Wednesday to the Head of Judiciary Branch Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, asked him to urgently review the case of attacks to the Saudi Arabian embassy and consulate in Tehran and Mashhad.

The culprits and the organisers of the blatant crime should be punished so that from now on, nobody dares to commit such a criminal act which is an offensive attack to the national security and the authority of the political system as well, wrote Dr Rouhani in his letter.

The reactions came after angry protestors in the Iranian cities of Tehran and Mashhad on Saturday night and Sunday stormed Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic buildings in protest at the Al Saud’s execution of prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

Iranian officials criticized the embassy attack and police arrested dozens of individuals involved.

Nonetheless, Saudi Arabia on Sunday severed its diplomatic ties with the Islamic Republic.
