More than 2,000 Syrian citizens, mostly Arabs, returned home in Tel Abyad city of Raqqa province, northeastern Syria, after the withdrawal of militants of ISIS, military sources reported.
The returnees were forcibly displaced from their hometown and crossed into Turkey weeks ago after fierce battles took place between Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and ISIS terrorists.
Sipan Dara, a member of the Kurdish Asayish security forces in Tel Abyad, said they have registered the names of more than 2,000 citizens, including 700 children, who returned to the city on Monday.
“We agreed with the Turkish side to allow only passage of those whose civil registry is in Tel Abyad,” he added. “Furthermore, tons of vegetables, fruit, and watermelon passed the crossing into the city.”
Dara said they agreed with the Turkish side for the entry of goods and relief materials from the crossing to Tel Abyad.
After Kurds regained the border city of Tel Abyad from IS militants last week, thousands of displaced civilians started returning home.
