Sheikh al-Bashir Atili preserves traditional Quran memorization methods in Algeria

Sheikh al-Bashir Atili has dedicated decades to Quranic education in Algeria, using traditional memorization techniques. His methods emphasize dictation and handwriting, fostering deep retention among students. Hundreds of Quran teachers and learners have benefited from his teaching legacy.

AhlulBayt News Agency: In the Algerian province of El Oued, Sheikh al-Bashir Atili, a veteran Quran teacher at the Tijaniyah Mosque in Bayadha, continues to inspire new generations through a traditional method of Quran memorization based on dictation and handwriting.

For over 30 years, Sheikh al-Bashir has relied on classical tools such as ink, reed pens, and wooden boards—methods passed down from his father and teachers. His journey in Quranic education began in childhood when his father wished for him to become a Quran memorizer.

In the late 1980s, his father enrolled him in a Quranic school that utilized simple materials, including wooden boards and ink pens, with dictation forming the foundation of memorization.

Now teaching around 250 students—both boys and girls—Sheikh al-Bashir encourages children under 15 to write verses by hand on blackboards, reinforcing their learning through repetition and focus.

He explains that this method engages both the hands and the mind, aiding retention and deeper understanding. Dictation sessions ensure accurate pronunciation and immediate correction of mistakes, helping students master Quranic script, which differs from everyday writing.

While not opposed to modern teaching tools, Sheikh al-Bashir remains dedicated to traditional techniques, believing they offer unique benefits for young learners.

Although some students initially struggle with the repetitive nature of the method, many later appreciate its effectiveness, continuing their Quranic education even after university or entering the workforce.

His approach not only facilitates Quran memorization but also improves handwriting, spelling, and verbal expression.

Over the years, Sheikh al-Bashir has trained hundreds of Quran teachers, mosque staff, and students—both men and women—making a lasting contribution to Quranic education in the Bayadha region.
