AhlulBayt News Agency reports that newly elected Pope Leo XIV has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, urging an end to violence in his first Sunday address.
During his noon blessing, Pope Leo echoed the peace messages frequently used by his late predecessor, Pope Francis, stating, “No more war.” He expressed deep sorrow over the ongoing conflict in Gaza and emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire.
The US-born 267th Bishop of Rome urged the international community to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza’s struggling civilian population and called for the release of all captives held by Hamas.
Speaking from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to an estimated 100,000 people, Pope Leo addressed world leaders with a renewed plea for peace, reiterating, “No more war.”
He welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, expressing hope that diplomatic efforts would lead to a lasting treaty between the two nations.
Additionally, Pope Leo called for an “authentic, just, and lasting peace” between Russia and Ukraine, while lamenting the ongoing conflicts across the globe.
