AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Masjid Khadijah and Islamic Centre on Cromwell Road in Peterborough opened its doors to the public on Sunday for its annual open day, welcoming diverse groups of people to learn about Islam and its practices.
The event, described as "well supported" by organizers, provided attendees with the opportunity to explore the mosque, observe congregation prayers, and ask questions about Islamic traditions, according to local media outlets.
Local dignitaries, including city councillors, Labour MP Andrew Pakes, and the mayor, Marco Cereste, were among those who attended.
In a post on X, MP Andrew Pakes praised the mosque’s contributions to the local community. "Our faith communities are the lifeforce of so many great things in Peterborough," he said.
The mosque, which is part of the UK Islamic Mission, was first established in a small house in 1986 and has since grown significantly.
Faisal Mahmood, a committee member, emphasized the mosque’s role in fostering community development.
"We aim to act as a place of worship for the Muslims in Peterborough, developing the community through our mosque, education, charitable, sports, and social activities, and taking a lead in improving individuals and society in all its dimensions," he said before the event.
The open day focused on promoting dialogue and community cohesion. "The event is primarily aimed at improving community cohesion and for us all to get to know one another better within the community," Mahmood added.
Nafis Lodhi, also from the mosque committee, expressed a commitment to continuing outreach efforts. "We hope to organize more events to engage and have a constructive dialogue with the local community," Lodhi said.
