Abu Musab al-Masri, top ISIS terrorist and the group’s minister of war, was reported dead after a Syrian raid in the northeastern Raqqa province.
“The death of al-Masri represents a major blow to Daesh terror group,” an army official said, using another acronym for ISIS.
Supported by Russia, the Syrian army has recently made a rapid advance in eastern Aleppo, recapturing areas near the western administrative border of Raqqa province.
Abu Omar al-Shishani, the previous ISIS minister of war, was killed in an airstrike by the coalition last year. ISIS confirmed al-Shishani’s death in July 2016, but said he had died fighting in the Iraqi city of Shirqat south of Mosul.
