Saudi Shiite writers: Media Misrepresents Events of Awamiya

A number of Saudi Shiite writers confirmed on March 30 in a TV program displayed on Rotane Khalyja that some media figures intended to distort the image of Awamiya and fuel sectarianism among Saudi citizen, saying that “there is a lot of exaggeration in the materials presented in media”.

They pointed out that what is going on in Awamiya is considered a kind of an incitement aimed to implicate youth in violence acts in order to achieve political goals.

Sukaina Almsheekhas, a Saudi female writer said that “people of Awamiya came out in demonstrations to demand their legitimate rights but some groups take advantage of the situation to commit violence acts”.

She said that “since Sunni Muslims have no association with al-Qaeda, Shiites should not hold the responsibility of some groups’ actions”. She added that “belonging to Awamiya became a crime because of what was raised in media”.

Almsheekhas indicated that security tension is still dominating Awamiya, adding that "the shooting has become a normal state and people used to hear the sound of bullets without feeling of fear”.

She explained that armed individuals are minority and usually come from environments which lack social and educational culture.
Mohammed Alossaimi, a writer said that “there are political agenda behind the events of Awamiya, calling to identify the beneficiaries from inciting violence in the region”.

He added that “Awamiya is a part of the state, accordingly we stand against any side seek to misrepresent the image of the town because of a minor group which used arms to raise tension in the region”.

On the other hand, Maytham Al-Jishi, a writer said that “the problem is not sectarian”.
Al-Jishi pointed out that there are a large number of poor people in Awamiya who lack political and social awareness which led them to use violence.
