3 militants killed in Indian-administered Kashmir

Three militants have been killed during a shoot-out along the Line of Control (LoC) in Indian-administered Kashmir.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The gunfight broke out on Friday between security forces and militants in Gujjar-Dur in Keran sector of frontier Kupwara district, situated some 125 kilometers northwest of Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar.

Following the gunfight, Indian army spokesman Colonel Naresh Vig issued a statement saying, “Our vigilant troops early today noticed some suspicious human movement in Gujjar-Dur area close to LoC.”

“The men fired on the army positions making it clear they were infiltrators trying to enter deep in our territory. In the ensuing gunfight three militants were killed,” the statement added.

No Indian troops have been killed or injured during the shoot-out, the statement said.

Indian troops are in constant clashes with the militants seeking independence in the area.

On September 26, five policemen and two civilians were killed in an attack on a police station in Indian-administered Kashmir.

A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said militants dressed in army fatigues stormed a police station in the town of Hiranagar, around 200 kilometers (126 miles) from the city of Srinagar and exchanged fire with security forces.

“We can confirm that five policemen and two civilians have been killed in the attack,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the Himalayan region has been the scene of violent demonstrations over the death of several people by the Indian army.

On September 20, violent clashes erupted in Srinagar after Indian paramilitary troops prevented hundreds of people from marching to the southern town of Shopian.

Shopian has been under curfew for two weeks, following the killing of five people in two paramilitary shootings.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan by the UN-monitored Line of Control, but is claimed in full by both countries. It lies at the heart of more than 65 years of hostility between India and Pakistan.

India and Pakistan have fought four wars since their independence from Britain in 1947 - two of them over Kashmir.

Thousands of people have been killed in Kashmir over the past 20 years.
