The First Sermon
In the first sermon, His Eminence, Sayyed Ali Fadlullah, talked about the role of religion in the life of man. He began by drawing the picture of what might happen once religion is lost, saying that people will live in an atmosphere of crime, robbery, corruption and the absence of morals in general.
The Sayyed cited the Ayah: “O believers, respond to God and His Messenger when He calls you to that which grants your life” (24:08) to explain that although God is addressing the people who are physically alive, it is religion which in fact grants them real life. It is the means of instilling life into the mind and the feelings, being a call for love and for the human entity as a whole.
It is a call to think without any boundaries and without any fanaticism. It is a call for the love of Allah and by Allah; a love that entails all people, especially the poor and the oppressed, and even those that one might differ with. It is the element that provides a balanced personality that never despairs, since Allah’s mercy always embraces man and opens closed doors for him.
It liberates man from his desires and from the others without turning him into an ignorant, lazy or weak individual. Any weakness and backwardness in our society is not the result of religion; on the contrary, it is the result of abandoning it and ascribing some of our own backwardness and ignorance to it.
It is a road map to build our life, to build the society of humanitarianism, justice and indiscrimination; the society of sublime morals. Those who abide by morals just because they are raised up in this way might not be truthful if their interests are harmed, but if truthfulness and honesty are part of the system the religion calls for, one will always be committed to them, even if they go against his interests. It is a life of purity, responsibility, love and mercy; a life of unity, tranquility and righteousness.
The second sermon
In the second sermon, His Eminence, Sayyed Ali Fadlullah, feared that the deployment of missiles on the borders of “Israel” and the continuous threats against Iran are a prelude for a new aggression to avenge for the enemy’s defeats in Lebanon and elsewhere. Thus, he called on all Palestinian parties to unify their ranks to confront any imminent aggression.
In Syria, the Sayyed reminded all parties that, in view of the continuing bloodshed, they should refrain from making conditions and take advantage of the window of opportunity for dialogue.
He also warned that the repercussions of what is happening in Syria will spill over to other countries, especially Lebanon. Therefore, the Lebanese ought to be aware of the negative consequences of their involvement in the Syrian crisis, whether on their internal relations or the relations with Syria.
On the internal level, the Lebanese government is actually living a state of unannounced resignation. It no longer cares to carry out any of its duties. He called on the government to find a solution for the issue of funding the raise in wages. If it could not, it should tell the Lebanese that there are no funds. The Sayyed also asked the opposition to play a positive role in this respect, and not only score points.
Moreover, he called for a national conference that includes the loyalists and the opposition, as well as all the concerned parties to study the way out of this impasse without falling into a treasury crisis that would reduce the value of the Lebanese pound; thus, creating a major social crisis and possibly a security one.
On the political level, the Sayyed warned against sectarian discourse, and told those who claim to be Islamists to be faithful to the teachings of Islam that consider the blood, honor and money of a Muslim as Haram for other Muslims. The Sayyed also called for studying the fears of all parties behind closed doors and not in public so as not to incite strife. He explained that it is the duty of all parties to diffuse the sectarian tensions, especially among Muslims.
