(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi says the members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) can have a special role in inhibiting the spread of the nuclear arms.
“Iran, which is about to assume the three-year rotating presidency of the movement, is persistently waiting for the implementation of the 6th article of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) related to eliminating the nuclear arms,” Salehi said addressing the NAM expert-level meeting in Tehran on Sunday.
The top Iranian diplomat said Iran believes the Zionist Regime of Israel is one of the sources of terrorism adding, Tehran as a responsible member of the international community specially the NAM has made every effort to fight terrorism.
“Right now, it is a very good time for taking efficient steps towards ending all forms of terrorism including state sponsored terrorism, which is supported by western powers and has become increasingly widespread with its latest example being the assassination of our [Iranian] innocent nuclear scientists,” Salehi said.
“We believe that meeting the deadline proposed by the NAM for the final elimination of the nuclear arms by 2025 will be possible only if we [NAM members] follow it with decisiveness,” he stated.
Salehi referred to the Zionist Regime’s refusal to join the NPT as the main obstacle in the way of making the treaty universal.
Iran's foreign minister also emphasized on the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear energy program saying that his country has always insisted on cooperation and interaction in this regard.
“We have always maintained the stance that Iran is neither after confrontation nor something more than its legal rights,” he said.
“What we are after is justice and refusing to accept solutions based on double standards in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other UN-affiliated organizations.”
More than 100 countries are partaking in the NAM meeting which kicked off in Tehran on Sunday and is scheduled to end on August 31.
