(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A leading human rights activist has told that Bahrain feels like a superpower due to its Western allies' silence about its atrocities and Saudi Arabia's support.
On Monday, Nabeel Rajab, the president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, a non-profit NGO, said, “With the silence of the United States, with the silence of the European countries, with the [financial] support of Saudi Arabia,” Bahrain has been emboldened.
“Bahrain's government understands that as a green signal” to continue the excessive use of force against anti-government protesters, he noted. “That's why they are acting like they are a superpower.”
Since mid-February, thousands of anti-government protesters have been staging regular demonstrations in the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.
On March 14, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates invaded the country to assist the Bahraini government in its crackdown on the peaceful protesters.
According to local sources, scores of people have been killed and hundreds arrested in the crackdown.
