(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Sana'a International Airport has been closed due to massive anti-regime demonstrations in which protesters took over a base of the elite Republican Guards in the Yemeni capital.
On Monday, the authorities redirected four flights to the southern port city of Aden, the Associated Press reported, citing an airport official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Earlier in the day, unarmed anti-government demonstrators joined forces with defected soldiers to seize the outpost of the Republican Guards, which are headed by Ahmed, the son of Yemen's Ali Abdullah Saleh.
The move marked a considerable gain for the protesters, who have been staging an uprising demanding the ouster of Saleh's regime since January.
However, in the crackdown on the demonstrations government forces killed 28 people in the capital and four others in the city of Taizz in the southwest on Monday. They also reportedly shelled Sana'a University.
Saleh has been receiving treatment in Saudi Arabia since June 4 for injuries he received in an RPG attack on the presidential palace on June 3.
On Sunday, forces loyal to Saleh killed 35 people and injured more than 700 others in Sana'a.
Meanwhile, Yemeni opposition activists said a number of Saudi troops in tanks and other armored vehicles entered the country on Monday to assist the regime's efforts to suppress the uprising.
