(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - India will support recognition of Palestinian independent statehood at the UN, PLO representative Nabil Shaath said Thursday.
The Indian foreign minister SM Krishna told Shaath in a meeting in the Indian capital New Delhi on Thursday that India will work to support the Palestinians' bid, due to be put to General Assembly vote on September 20.
Shaath briefed the minister on the Arab follow-up committee's meeting in Qatar, and delivered a letter from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the Indian President and Prime Minister, the statement said, without elaborating.
The PLO official noted that India recognized a Palestinian state in 1988, and has diplomatic relations, including a representative office in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Shaath is touring Asian countries in the lead-up to a meeting in Russia to coordinate the UN bid.
