(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A senior Iranian lawmaker has urged the international community to break the silence over the British government's human rights violations.
Chairman of Iran's Majlis (parliament) Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi emphasized that the British government revealed its true colors by suppressing people during recent protests in the country, Fars news agency reported.
He said that recent developments in the UK reflect the injustices suffered by people in Britain.
Boroujerdi condemned the use of violence by British police against protesters and said London claims to be an advocate of human rights but does not tolerate its own citizens on the streets.
The UK has lost face in the global community for its recent crackdown on British protesters, he said, adding that UK officials can no longer claim to be advocate human rights.
The unrest in the UK erupted on August 6, when a few hundred people gathered outside a police station in the north London suburb of Tottenham to protest against the fatal shooting of a black man, Mark Duggan, on Thursday.
The protesters also set a bus and buildings on fire on High Road and broke many shop windows.
Turmoil then spread to major cities, such as Birmingham, Liverpool and Bristol.
London Police have resorted to a brutal crackdown on protesters, arresting more than 1,500 people by the end of the week.
On Friday, Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned British charge d'affaires in Tehran over the continuing use of violence by police against protesters and called on the British government to “heed the demands and true requests” of protesters.
