(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - “I know America looks with some suspicion, at least in the newspapers, as to what it is that China is doing worldwide,” Edward Peck, former US Ambassador to Iraq, told in an interview.
He saw China's pursuit of its interests as legitimate, saying “China is looking out for its own interests. And if it can do so while helping Iraq, nobody should complain too much about that.”
“I would think that from the point of view of helping Iraq out of the problems that it now faces -- some of them of course the result of America's invasion -- this would be a good thing,” Peck added.
Elsewhere in the interview the ex-US ambassador referred to America's incapability to undertake the reconstruction of Iraq single-handedly.
“America has limited resources and a limited patience and infrastructure projects have a major meaning in Iraq,” he noted.
“So much has been destroyed or rendered useless that it will be a long time and [will need] a lot of effort, money and a lot of people involved to get the economy back to where it was before the wars, before the invasion, because so much of the country has just been shattered from the power systems to the water supply to the sewage treatment to the roads.”
China and Iraq, during Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's visit to Beijing on Monday, vowed to enhance their bilateral economic cooperation.
