(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The explosion occurred east of El-Arish, a city in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, located about 50km west of the Israeli border, the governor of Northern Sinai told Nile Television on Tuesday.
Flames from the blast could be seen up to 20km away, the broadcaster reported, without giving details on the causes of the explosion or the damage incurred.
A security guard and his family were injured in the blast, the official MENA state news agency reported on Tuesday, without citing its sources.
Fire trucks were working to contain the blaze and security forces were scanning the area to "find those behind this explosion and to find the type of explosives used", the report said.
Many Egyptians have been protesting against exporting natural gas to Israel since toppled President Hosni Mubarak’s tenure.
It was the fourth attack on the pipeline since an 18-day uprising toppled Hosni Mubarak's regime on February 11.
No one claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attack but disgruntled Bedouin tribesmen in the area have been blamed for attacking the pipeline in the past.
Egypt provides up to 45 percent of Israel's gas imports according to the terms of a 20-year contract signed in 2005.
The exports have long been a controversial issue in Egypt, as Hosni Mubarak's regime was accused of selling gas to Israel too cheaply.
Following an April attack, the Egyptian authorities stepped up security measures along the 192-kilometer (119-mile) pipeline.
