(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Anti-fascist campaign, Unite Against Fascism (UAF) has also hold counter-protests against what they expressed as a "summer of hate" by the EDL.
The anti-Islam group's largest protest happened in Cambridge, where they opposed the plans to build a mosque in the Mill Road area.
Thousands of UAF supporters also staged a rival protest, which was formerly backed by an impressive list of local councillors, trade unionists, community leaders, and activists in the city.
Some 670 officers policed the demonstration, preventing the violent scenes employed by the EDL thugs in the previous occasions.
In a statement issued by Cambridge UAF, the group leaders strongly opposed the EDL plans, believing the group is racist and Fascist dedicated to attacking Asian people and Muslims.
“The EDL are deeply Islamophobic - bigoted against Muslims -which is as unacceptable as any other form of racism. The EDL's aim is to divide us by making scapegoats of one community, just as the Nazis did with the Jews in the 1930s and the National Front attempted in the 1970s. Today they threaten Muslims. Tomorrow it could be Jewish people, Hindus, Sikhs, black people, travelers, or Eastern Europeans,” the statement read.
While the English Defense League claims on their Facebook page to "protect and promote the Human Rights" and "promote Democracy and the rule of law by opposing Sharia," analysts attribute the sudden formation and rise of the racist group to mounting support from politicians and the media for Islamophobia in Britain.
Consequently, insulting, ignoring, and caricaturing Islam and Muslim communities is considered as acceptable, since these defaming ways are judged as part of culture, not symptoms of racial discrimination.
Critics complain that the EDL is openly intimidating the Muslim residents across Britain with impunity, with the British government allowing the blatant provocation under the pretext of freedom of speech.
