(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - According to Antiwar.com reported on Tuesday The audit, by Special Inspector General for Iraqi Reconstruction, blamed the Pentagon for not keeping track of the funds.
It also reported that the US has simply loaded transport planes with USD 100 bills and did little to keep track of it when the planes landed.
Pentagon officials determined that one giant C-130 Hercules cargo plane could carry USD 2.4 billion in shrink-wrapped bricks of USD 100 bills. They sent an initial full planeload of cash, followed by 20 other flights to Iraq by May 2004 in a USD 12-billion haul that US officials believe to be the biggest international cash airlift of all time.
Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction Stuart Bowen said it may be the “largest theft of funds in national history.”
The revelation came days after Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher suggested during a Baghdad visit that Iraq repay the US for money it spent on the 2003 invasion and post-war reconstruction.
The comment infuriated Iraqi officials and forced the government to ask the five-term California Republican and his congressional delegation to leave the country.
