(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Addressing a joint press conference with the governor of Iraqi southern city of Najaf, Adnan Al Zurufi, the Iranian ambassador added that about 604,000 Iraqi pilgrims also paid a visit to Iran in the same period.
Al Zurufi, for his part, said that Iraq-Iran ties are historical and that “the Najaf governorate will do all it can to help pilgrims arriving in the city.”
Host to the shrines of six Shia Imams in the central cities of Najaf, Karbala, Kadhimiya and the northern city of Samarra, Iraq draws millions of pilgrims from Iran and other countries throughout the year.
Last week, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi called on Iraq to provide the growing number of visiting Iranian pilgrims with better amenities and resources during their tours of the country's holy sites.
Salahi made the appeal during a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari in the Indonesian island of Bali on Thursday on the sidelines of the 16th meeting of foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement.
