The Pakistani army said in a statement on Tuesday that security forces arrested a “senior al-Qaeda operative, Mohammad Ali Qasim Yaqub alias Abu Sohaib Al Makki” from Karachi.
“According to preliminary investigations, Al Makki is a Yemeni national and has been working directly under al-Qaeda leaders along Pak-Afghan border,” the statement said.
“The arrest of Al Makki is a major development in unraveling the al-Qaeda network operating in the region,” it added.
On Tuesday, security forces in Pakistan's troubled southwestern province of Balochistan killed at least five al-Qaeda militants when they were planning to carry out bombings in the region.
