(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Hundreds of protesters took to streets in the city of Sohar, located about 200 kilometers (125 miles) northwest of the capital Muscat, following Friday prayers.
The protesters demanded the release of people detained in government crackdowns.
Clashes broke out between Omani police and demonstrators. Government forces attempted to disperse the crowd by firing tear gas, water cannons and live bullets at the protesters in order to disperse them.
The recent demonstrations in the Persian Gulf nation of Oman are the latest in a series of revolutions that have rocked repressive regimes across Northern Africa and Middle East. The revolutions have so far removed Tunisian and Egyptian rulers from power.
