Ahlul Bayt News Agency ; The leader of Harrow Council has admitted even he was surprised to learn Halal was the only meat option on school lunch menus.
Councilor Bill Stephenson, himself a former school governor, told there will be nothing the authority can do if head teachers decide to continue with the policy.
Stephenson said: “It was a bit of a surprise that schools were offering halal meat. When I was a governor I wasn't aware of it.
“It's a decision for schools, I would suggest that schools consult with parents, governors, staff and even students and the wider community about what meals they provide.”
He said he did not have a view on whether a non-Halal meat option should be provided but said he thought the issue “should be discussed openly”.
At present all secondary schools in the area serve vegetarian and fish options as the only alternative to meat prepared using the traditional Islamic method.
Many residents, including members of other religious groups say they do not object to Halal food being served as long as there is an alternative meat option.
Even Harrow Central Mosque thanked schools for catering to Muslims but said other faiths and communities should be provided for as well.
