Secretary General of High Council on Iranian Nationals Residing Abroad Mohammad Sharif Malekzadeh said on Thursday evening that Hamid Masoumi-Nejad, a veteran Iranian reporter jailed in Italy on baseless allegations of arms trafficking, has been freed.

According to Ahlul Bayt (A) News Agency – ABNA.ir – Masoumi-Nejad had been working as a senior correspondent of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in Rome for more than 15 years before being arrested by Italian police on March 3.

Speaking to IRNA, Malekzadeh said Masoumi-Nejad was released following serious and timely measures taken by the high council, legal department of the Presidential Office, and the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
