Egyptian ambassador in Baghdad Sherif Shahin visited the al-Hussein and al-Abbas shrines in Krbala and praised the stable security conditions in the holy Shiite city, a local official said on Friday.

“Ambassador Shahin paid a landmark visit, the first ever by an Egyptian envoy since the fall of the former regime in 2003, to the holy sites in Karbala,” said Jamal al-Shahrestani, the official in charge of relations at the al-Husseini Mosque.

Karbala lies 110 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
