AhlulBayt News Agency: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has denounced the United States and Israel for what he called aggressive acts against Iran, arguing that they undermine diplomacy, international law, and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Speaking at the 17th BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday, Araghchi emphasized that Israel’s recent 12-day military strikes were unprovoked and carried out with U.S. cooperation and eventual participation.
He stated that the attacks violated the UN Charter, resulting in over 6,000 casualties and widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and nuclear sites in Iran.
Araghchi said the joint U.S.-Israeli actions against Iran’s nuclear facilities blatantly breached the NPT and UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which supports Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.
He claimed that the U.S. involvement in striking Iran's civilian nuclear sites proved full complicity in Israel’s aggression against Iran.
On June 13, Israel reportedly launched attacks that killed top Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists in what Tehran deemed an act of war.
Nine days later, on June 22, the U.S. began direct strikes on Iranian nuclear installations, further violating international agreements.
On June 24, the Israeli regime, isolated globally, announced a unilateral ceasefire—through a statement made by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Araghchi reiterated Iran’s peaceful nuclear intentions, under constant monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
He labeled the assaults by Israel and the U.S. as unparalleled violations of global peace and norms.
He argued that no lawful framework allows for targeting IAEA-monitored nuclear facilities based on speculative claims of militarization.
Araghchi praised the Iranian nation’s resilience and said the country would continue defending itself against external aggression with strength and dignity.
He added that Israel's illegal actions are consistently enabled by unwavering U.S. and some European support.
The foreign minister argued that Israeli aggression stems from unchecked impunity granted by its international backers.
He urged all UN members to condemn the attacks and uphold the principles of justice and collective security.
He warned against distortion of facts by Israeli officials and their allies, calling any justification for the war a form of complicity.
Araghchi called for legal accountability for Israel and the United States for their international violations, including breaches of humanitarian and human rights laws.
He emphasized that the consequences of this aggression would go beyond Iran, destabilizing the broader region and international order.
He stated that such acts undermine the UN-based international system and promote dangerous unilateralism.
Araghchi urged states, multilateral bodies, and UN institutions to act decisively to hold the perpetrators of these violations accountable.
He thanked BRICS nations that condemned the actions of nuclear-armed Israel and the United States since June 13.
He concluded by stressing BRICS’ responsibility as a voice of the Global South, defending multilateralism, international law, and peaceful dispute resolution.
The 17th BRICS Summit began in Rio de Janeiro under the banner: “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.”
Originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS expanded in 2024 to include Iran, Egypt, the UAE, and Ethiopia.
The bloc supports a multipolar world and presents itself as an alternative to Western-dominated political and economic systems. BRICS countries represent 46% of the world’s population, 36% of its GDP, and 25% of global exports.
