AhlulBayt News Agency: A new poll commissioned by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) reveals that the majority of British citizens support imposing full military sanctions against Israel.
The survey, conducted by Opinium Research between May 30 and June 2, found that 57% of respondents believe the UK should impose a complete arms embargo on Israel.
Only 13% of the British public opposed such a measure.
Additionally, 53% of respondents expressed support for expelling Israel from the United Nations.
The poll also showed that half of British citizens believe products made in Israeli-occupied territories should be boycotted.
Furthermore, 54% of respondents backed sanctions against far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who has been a vocal advocate of Israel’s total blockade, which has left 93% of Gaza’s population suffering from acute food insecurity.
According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), “From May 11 to the end of September 2025, the entire territory is classified as Emergency (IPC Phase 4), with the entire population expected to face Crisis or worse acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above)."
"This includes 470,000 people (22% of the population) in Catastrophe (IPC Phase 5), over a million people (54%) in Emergency (IPC Phase 4), and the remaining half million (24%) in Crisis (IPC Phase 3).”
In September 2024, the British government suspended approximately 30 arms export licenses after determining that the weapons might have been used to facilitate serious violations of international humanitarian law.
However, 90% of arms export licenses to Israel remain active, and Britain’s Royal High Court is currently reviewing the legality of UK arms sales to Israel.
Ben Jamal, PSC’s director, stated, “The polling released this morning speaks to Israel’s growing isolation and the significant public support for sanctions.”
“By continuing to arm and support Israel even as it enacts a genocide and a policy of forced starvation, the British government is holding on to an increasingly fringe position, completely out of sync with public opinion and the views of those who supported it in the last election,” he warned.
On Wednesday, thousands of activists plan to form a kilometer-long barrier around the Houses of Parliament in London, linked by a stretch of red fabric, to demand an end to British military support for Israel and the imposition of sanctions on the occupying entity.
“Those bringing the demand for an arms embargo to Parliament … in a symbolic red line are doing so knowing that the demand is supported by the majority of their fellow citizens,” Jamal said.
An increasing number of British public figures have spoken out against Israel’s war in Gaza, which has killed at least 54,607 Palestinians and wounded 125,341 since October 7, 2023, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
The overwhelming majority of victims have been women and children.
