The All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), in alliance with leading Muslim organizations in the southern state of Telangana, has announced a large-scale peaceful demonstration on Sunday, June 1, 2025, in Hyderabad. The event, branded under the theme “Sunday is Waqf Day,” will take place from 2 PM to 5 PM at Dharna Chowk, Lower Tank Bund.
Unified Effort to Protect Waqf Properties
The mass mobilization comes in response to growing concerns over the management and protection of Waqf properties—endowments made by Muslims for religious or charitable purposes. A recent high-level consultative meeting in Hyderabad, attended by prominent religious scholars and organizational leaders, resulted in the decision to unify the protest effort under the AIMPLB’s leadership, avoiding confusion over conflicting dates and reinforcing a consolidated message.
Prominent Scholars and Community Leaders to Join
Among those expected to address or participate in the protest are:
- Maulana Mufti Khaleel Ahmed, Head of the historic Jamia Nizamia seminary
- Maulana Dr. Mateen Qadri and Dr. Mohammad Mushtaq Ali, senior AIMPLB members
- Maulana Hyder Nisar Agha and Maulana Masood Mushtahidi, AIMPLB board members
- Ms. Hafza Akhtar, representing women on the Board
Other key figures from associated Muslim organizations will also be present, including leaders from Jamiat Ulema, Qadria International, and the United Muslim Forum. Youth representatives from the Tablighi Jamaat and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) have pledged their support.
June 1 Designated as Official ‘Waqf Day’
Organizers clarified that June 1 has been officially designated by the AIMPLB as “Waqf Day,” dismissing rumors of protests on alternate dates. The key demand is for formal recognition of this day to highlight the urgency of protecting Waqf assets and preserving Muslim heritage sites across India.
Interfaith Participation and Broad Community Support
In a significant show of interfaith solidarity, members of Hindu, Christian, and Sikh communities are also expected to participate. Organizers emphasized the inclusive nature of the protest, encouraging broad participation from women, youth, and elders across all communities.
A Call for Unity and Action
AIMPLB leaders have framed the protest as a peaceful yet powerful stand to defend religious and cultural institutions at a time when many Waqf properties face legal and administrative challenges. They called on all sections of society to join the demonstration, describing it as a vital step toward preserving pluralism, minority rights, and religious heritage in India.
