European carriers cancel flights to occupied territories amid rising tensions in region

Several major airlines, including Air France and Lufthansa, have extended their suspension of flights to occupied Palestinian territories due to Yemen’s aerial blockade against Israel. Yemeni forces have vowed continued strikes on Israeli targets as long as the war persists.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Several major international airlines have extended their suspension of flights to the occupied Palestinian territories amid Yemen’s ongoing aerial blockade against Israel.

On Tuesday, Air France announced that it would postpone resuming services to the territories until May 24. The airline had initially planned to restart flights this week but opted for an additional delay after conducting last-minute reviews.

The Lufthansa Group, which includes Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings, also extended its suspension of flights. The group had initially planned to resume operations on May 26 but has now delayed flights until at least June 8. Affected passengers have been offered free cancellations or rebookings.

Britain’s EasyJet, which includes EasyJet UK, EasyJet Switzerland, and EasyJet Europe, has similarly postponed its return to the region, pushing its resumption date back to at least June 30.

European carriers such as Aegean Airlines have also canceled planned flights. Aegean Airlines, based in Greece, withdrew its scheduled return at the last minute, with no new date announced. Ethiopian Airlines canceled one flight from Addis Ababa to Tel Aviv and its return journey, while Air Canada, originally planning a June resumption, announced it would not resume operations in the foreseeable future.

The flight suspensions follow Yemen’s Armed Forces announcement of an aerial blockade on May 4. Previously, Yemeni forces had struck Israel’s Ben Gurion airport multiple times using hypersonic ballistic missiles.

Yemen had earlier imposed a naval blockade on Israeli ships and vessels bound for the occupied territories. The forces have vowed to maintain their strikes as long as Israel continues its war, which has killed at least 53,573 Palestinians, mostly women and children, across Gaza.

According to Yemeni officials, these operations will persist until Israel lifts its intensified blockade on Gaza, which has worsened the humanitarian crisis
