AhlulBayt News Agency - The so-called Islamic State (ISIS) launched a large-scale offensive inside the provincial capital of Deir Ezzor on Monday, targeting the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) controlled Tahtuh District near the military airport.
ISIS was able to advance past the Deir Ezzor Slaughterhouse to the fringes of the Tahtuh District; however, they were unable to infiltrate into the area, despite being at battle for several hours with the Syrian Armed Forces on Monday.
ISIS’ media wing “Al-‘Amaq” claimed that the terrorist group captured the district and even posted pictures, but this was later denied by residents and members of the Syrian Armed Forces.
The Tahtuh District is important to ISIS because it borders the western bank of the Euphrates and it overlooks Saqr Island.
In the past, the Syrian Armed Forces would attack Saqr Island from the Tahtuh District; this is one of the reasons why ISIS is attempting to seize this area.
