AhlulBayt News Agency: Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, held discussions on Sunday with members of Afghanistan's Shia Scholars Council during his visit to Kabul for talks with the Taliban-led interim government.
In the meeting, council members expressed their gratitude to Iran for hosting Afghan refugees for over 45 years and for offering educational and livelihood opportunities to many. They said it is necessary to maintain and strengthen the historical and cultural ties between the two nations.
The scholars voiced satisfaction with the growing cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan, emphasizing that enhanced bilateral relations would benefit both countries.
They also stressed the need to expand scientific and cultural exchanges and encourage dialogue between Shia and Sunni scholars to promote Islamic unity.
Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to deepening ties with Afghanistan, particularly in economic, trade, and cultural spheres. He underscored the significant contributions of Afghanistan’s Shia community to the country’s scientific, cultural, and religious progress.
He called for unity among Afghanistan’s ethnic and religious groups, stressing that fostering mutual respect is crucial for creating a secure and prosperous society.
Shia Muslims, mostly Hazaras, form about 22 percent of Afghanistan’s population. Historically marginalized, the Hazara community has faced severe discrimination, economic hardships, and targeted violence. Under Taliban rule, concerns about their safety and access to rights have intensified.
The community has been subjected to brutal attacks, including kidnappings and killings by the Daesh Takfiri group, further exacerbating their vulnerabilities.
Araghchi concluded by urging stronger bonds among Afghanistan’s diverse groups, emphasizing that national cohesion is essential for the country’s stability and progress.
