15 mosques set for upgrading, 2 years ahead of schedule

The upgrading of 15 mosques will be kick-started this year, two years ahead of schedule.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - When it is completed in 2016, worshippers can look forward to new facilities like elderly friendly ramps, toilets for the disabled and bigger prayer halls.

Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim announced the accelerated timetable in Parliament on Thursday, citing the healthy state of the Mosque Building and Mendaki Fund as the reason.

Its annual collection had gone up steadily from $14.8 million in 2009 to $16.5 million in 2010. Phase two of the Mosque Upgrading Programme (MUP) was thus brought forward.
