Indian Muslim couple sells home amid protests by Hindu neighbors

A Muslim couple in India has sold their newly purchased house in Moradabad's affluent TDI City neighborhood following protests from Hindu residents opposing their presence based on religious grounds.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A Muslim couple in India has sold their newly purchased house in Moradabad's affluent TDI City neighborhood following protests from Hindu residents opposing their presence based on religious grounds.

The dispute arose on Tuesday evening after local residents learned about the property sale. A video of the protest circulated widely online, showing one resident, Megha Arora, expressing strong opposition to the Muslim couple's arrival.

Arora asserted that the seller, Dr. Ashok Bajaj, acted without informing the neighborhood and claimed their presence would disrupt the area's social harmony.

“We cannot tolerate a Muslim family living near our temple,” she stated. She also vowed to continue protesting to prevent the couple from residing there.

The protestors escalated the matter by filing a formal complaint at the district magistrate’s office, chanting slogans against both the seller and the Muslim buyers, according to the Dhaka Tribune.

By Friday, the situation had been resolved through mediation facilitated by a local elected official. Bajaj confirmed later that an agreement was reached for the Muslim couple to sell the property to a Hindu family already living in the residential complex.

Bajaj, an eye surgeon who had lived in TDI City for six years, explained that he sold the house to the couple, both doctors, with whom his family shared a decades-long personal relationship.

He expressed disappointment at the controversy, labeling the uproar over the sale as "unnecessary" and unexpected.

The couple ultimately chose not to move into the property, citing the backlash. The incident has drawn national attention and sparked debate about religious tolerance and housing discrimination in India.
