Iran's Mashhad, Iraq's Karbala become sister cities

Director-General of the Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization in Iran's eastern province of Khorasan Razavi has said that Mashhad, the second largest city in the country and Iraq’s holy city of Karbala have become sister cities through agreement signed in Iraq.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Director-General of the Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization in Iran's eastern province of Khorasan Razavi has said that Mashhad, the second largest city in the country and Iraq’s holy city of Karbala have become sister cities through agreement signed in Iraq.

Javad Mousavi said that Yaghoub Ali Nazari, the governor-general of Khorasan Razavi province, in a meeting with Nassif Jassim Al-Khattabi, governor of Karbala, had signed an agreement to cooperate in the fields of culture and social issues that became effective as of Wednesday May 10, 2023.

Mousavi added that the two side’s private sectors will cooperate in the fields of tourism to facilitate the movement of pilgrims between Mashhad and Karbala, two cities that host major holy shia shrines.

He said the agreements will also cover health tourism issues with a focus on Iraqis who travel to Mashhad to receive medical services.
