(AhlulBayt News Agency) - A number of worshipers performed individual prayers in Diraz’s Imam Al Sadiq Mosque in what marked yet another week of a persisting ban on Shiite Friday prayers in the northwestern Bahraini village.
Diraz is home to some 30,000 people, who have been subjected to an unprecedented lockdown by Manama’s security forces since the denaturalization of Bahrain’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim in June 2016.
The virtual siege also involves a ban on what was once the country’s largest Shiite congregation during Friday prayers.
Armored vehicles were deployed to cordon off the mosque as concrete barricades and police checkpoints restricted people’s freedom of movement throughout Diraz.
There is little sign that the ban will be lifted any time soon even as rights campaigners outline Manama’s systematic discrimination against Bahrain’s Shiite majority at the ongoing session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
