UN chief acknowledges need for restructuring UN Security Council

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Addressing a meeting with Iranian academics and journalists, Ban said the UN Security Council should be reformed and changed and there is no doubt about that.He said many conflicts and tensions worldwide stem from disagreement among five permanent members of the UN Security Council.He added any decision due to be made on important global issues faces row among the five permanent UN Security Council members, who have the veto power.Ban Ki-moon said the five UN Security Council members should be in consensus and get united.He said that’s a call raised by majority of the UN member states for 20 years.He added that another reason for the reforms is increase in number of the UN members since 1960s, which prompt the reforms.In light of unity and consensus, the UN would be able to prevent the tensions and conflicts through peace-keeping operations, he added.He said he believed in peace and justice, noting that peace minus justice would be temporary and non-sustained.“Peace, development and justice are all tightly interlinked.”In some other point of his remarks, Ban praised Iran’s success in decreasing maternal death rate and poverty and growing presence of women in social scenes, as women constitute half those admitted to academic centers.He said Iran has also advantage of young people making up for majority.Praising Persian culture and Iranian initiative of dialogue among civilization, Ban lauded Iran’s chairing NAM for the next three years. He said it is a great opportunity available to Iran.He expressed condolence to Iran over the killer quake northwest of the country, saying UN is ready to rush any sort of help needed.He praised Iran’s Human Rights charter raised by Cyrus the Great some 2000 years ago, saying it’s sign of Iran’s rich culture. /219
