Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa says that the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) can bring together emerging nations.
“The Non-Aligned Movement brings together countries that are emerging and becoming stronger,” the foreign minister said, following the opening ceremony of the 16th NAM summit in the Iranian capital Tehran.
Natalegawa stressed the importance of constructive “cooperation” and “collaboration” between NAM member states, in "promoting the idea of equitable development as well”.
He pointed to the many difficulties the international community faces, including international peace, security and development, and the need for such issues to be addressed at the NAM summit.
The minister also highlighted the significance of Iran and its role in recent and upcoming developments.
“Iran has made considerable contributions to various multilateral issues at the United Nations, at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and, of course, within NAM. It is what it is.”
